Emma Koponen

Emma-Johanna Koponen is a Finnish pianist, currently pursuing her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Michigan with professor Arthur Greene. In addition, she is going to accomplish MM degree in Piano Performance at Sibelius Academy, too.

Emma is an active performer with wide experience. In all music making her goal is to reach above the everyday atmosphere and share that experience with others through play. As a soloist, she has played with Finnish Radio and Kuopio Symphony orchestras. She has performed in several music festivals in Finland as a soloist and chamber musician.

When playing chamber music, Emma loves to immerse herself in the role-like and communicative way of playing. She is also a passionate teacher and considers that teaching is one of the most important ways to share musical experiences and reach new levels in musical understanding. Additionally, Emma enjoys playing the fortepiano and oboe. In free time, she may be exploring the woods, or be at home, cozily knitting and baking.

Emma has received Bachelor’s in Music in Sibelius Academy in 2016 with Jussi Siirala and continued her Masters’s studies with Hanna Aho-Oikkonen. Her earlier teachers in her hometown’s Kuopio Conservatory have been Katariina Liimatainen and Ella Untamala Mia Muona has been her very first piano teacher and inspirer at the beginning of her musical path. Other important mentors for Emma are Tuija Hakkila and Paavali Jumppanen as well as many musicians she has met at masterclasses and festivals. Finnish Cultural Foundation, Pro Musica Foundation and American-Scandinavian Foundation have supported Emma’s studies.
