Biography:


Joona Uusitalo started playing piano at the age of five in Järvenpää Suzuki School with Kaisa Saarikorpi. Later he studied with Heli Ahvenainen-Saaristo in Keskinen Uudenmaa Music school and then he studied four years with Mikko Haapaniemi. In autumn 2017 he started studying with Erik T. Tawaststjerna at the Sibelius Academy youth department. Currently his teachers are Erik T. Tawaststjerna and Antti Siirala.

Joona Uusitalo has played Grieg Piano Concerto and the first movement of the Mozart's 20th Piano Concerto in D minor with the Keskinen Uudenmaa Music School Orchestra. He has participated in the master classes of Jussi Siirala, Teppo Koivisto, Erik T. Tawaststjerna and Robert Levin and he has also worked as a rehearsal accompanist with Olli Mustonen.

In 2018 he recieved third prize in Young artist -category of International Krogulski Piano Competition in Poland and a diploma in Piano Masters -category in the same competition. Joona has played in several events such as Mänttä Music festival, National Chopin festival and Steinway festival in Helsinki. Besides classical music Joona is also interested in jazz music and he has appeared as a jazz pianist in several occasions. 

Alongside his studies in Sibelius Academy youth department Joona is still studying in Järvenpää High School. He performs regularly there with his jazz band. In addition to playing piano Joona Uusitalo plays French horn in Keskinen Uudenmaa Music School Orchestra. He also plays chess and he has won a second prize in Finnish Youth Chess Championship in 2016.
